For its musicians and for all those who work with them, the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées is one of a kind. The musicians’ passion for their profession and the respect they show each other are immediately striking. There is not a trace of the strict hierarchy found in traditional orchestras. This helps encourage all the musicians to get invoved and make a contribution, and therefore to share a common interest in the artistic outcome.
The hard-to-describe, individualistic yet unified spirit which drives the entire orchestra stems from the mix of people and cultures, with musicians from over ten different countries. To refer to them in the singular would be denying the very essence of this orchestra which is a tribute to diversity. The musicians’ training and experience reflect this diversity. They are certainly not from the same mould. Some members teach at conservatories; others are freelancers. Some began their musical careers during the renaissance of baroque music; others began as permanent members of an established orchestra then opted for more independence and freedom in choosing which productions they would like to participate in.
Whether instruments makers or bookworms, jazz musicians or contemporary music fans, all the musicians in the orchestra extol the virtues of an open mind when approaching musical works. All enjoy the pleasure of (re)discovery, the enthusiasm and curiosity involved in questionning the traditionnal ways of interpreting the orchestral repertoire; as well as the pleasure of playing in music in the true sense of the word, that of shaping the sound. They aim to do justice to composers by respecting the true nature of their work-something that some demiurgic conductors may override in favour of their own visions, but that Philippe Herreweghe likes to allow to emeerge naturally. The Orchestre des Champs-Élysées thus represents a fertile ground for ideas and new experiences, a liberating breath of fresh air far away from the musical routine.
