"The disc not only evokes the sound of a much larger symphonic ensemble, but also lacks even the slightest touch of stridency. The string passages are very nearly as sweet-sounding as you’d hear on any modern-instrument recording of these works. Orchestral climaxes are delivered with tremendous impact, and brass and percussion offer the requisite heft to lift these performances to a level of grandeur that one would only expect from a larger, more modern orchestra. Philippe Herreweghe is superb in his ability to elicit every ounce of nuance in the playing of these Romantic warhorses.

Even for a first exposure to these works of Schumann, you’d be hard pressed to do better than this excellent disc. Very highly recommended."

"Philppe Herreweghe and the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées stress the sober, multi-colored, unique orchestration of the Knaben Wunderhorn as well as its fine and varied sound palette. This interpretation gives the adequate ballad tone, apparently simple but made sublime by the most extreme refinement."

"We knew that the Bach specialist Philippe Herreweghe was a great Brucknerian musician. But Mahler ! No, really, it was not natural. Here is the CD and it has become obvious ! (...) Not only a first Mahler disc : a great Mahler disc'"

"The truth of the Mahlerian sound and imagination was not very far rfrom our reach. But it had to be found."

"There's much to admire in this new version of a much-recorded work, not least Herreweghe's keenly judged tempi and delicate, chamber - like way with the orchestral part, which allows us, in a well ventilated recording, to hear every detail of the magical scoring finely played by the conductor's own orchestra."
