Gustav Mahler
Rückert-Lieder

Anton Bruckner
Symphony N.5

Christian Gerhaher, baritone
Orchestre des Champs-Élysées
Conductor : Philippe Herreweghe

Philippe Herreweghe and the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées
follow their Bruckner path with the Fifth symphony. According
to Bruckner, this highly feverish and complex symphony is
his « counterpoint masterpiece ».
The Rückert-Lieder, sung by one of the greatest baritones of
the moment, completes the concert programme.

Gustav Mahler
Todtenfeier

Johannes Brahms

Ein deutsches Requiem

Sine Bundgaard / Sybilla Rubens, soprano
Markus Werba / Florian Boesch, baryton

Collegium Vocale Gent
Orchestre des Champs-Élysées
Conductor : Philippe Herreweghe

Instead of the prayers usually found in Requiems, Brahms
chose short excerpts (in German) from the Old Testament,
organised following a spiritual scheme. In between
Schumann’s death and his own mother’s mortal suffering,
Brahms offers us a serene dream without Judge or
Redeemer – which consoles us from the vanity of all
worldly things.
Born from a funeral dream, Todtenfeier is a work that Mahler
composed as a symphonic poem. It was later to become the
first movement of his Second symphony.

Joseph Haydn
Symphony n°44 « Funeral »
Cello concerto in C majeur
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Symphony n°29 K.201

Jean-Guihen Queyras, cello
Orchestre des Champs-Élysées
Alessandro Moccia, Konzertmeister

Jean-Guihen Queyras comes back for a new cooperation
with the OCE in a classical programme. Rediscovered in
1961, Haydn’s Cello concerto is now one of his most popular
concertos. The Funeral Symphony, a very « Sturm und Drang »
work, owes its name to the slow movement : Haydn wanted it
to be played for his own funeral.
Composed when he was 18, Mozart’s Symphony n°29 has not so
much to do with the “elegant style” style he developed in his
former Salzburg symphonies. The Andante comes close to
lyricism, the final movement bursts with joy : a step towardshis
more mature style.

Joseph Haydn
Symphony N.94 "Surprise"

Orchestre des Champs-Élysées
Conductor : Philippe Herreweghe

A surprise for the TAP’s unveiling ! Created in 1792,
the 94th Symphony played a great role in Haydn’s success
in London and then in Vienna. The fortissimo surprise
in the 2nd movement was aimed to “wake the ladies”
and its effect is still powerful. But the famous joke can’t hide
the other beauties of the piece, which represents a subtle balance
between popular culture and art music.

Anton Bruckner
Symphonie N.8

Orchestre des Champs-Élysées
Conductor : Philippe Herreweghe

After the much appreciated interpretations of the Fourth, Fifth
and Seventh Symphonies, Philippe Herreweghe and the
Orchestre des Champs-Élysées carry on with the exploration
of Bruckner works. The largest Bruckner symphony kept
the composer busy for six years. The critics called it
the "crown of nineteenth century music" and Hugo Wolf wrote :
“The work renders all criticism futile.”

Symphony N.3 "Eroica"

Jean-Guihen Queyras, cello
Orchestre des Champs-Élysées
Conductor : Philippe Herreweghe

Following Haydn’s ”Surprise” Symphony, Jean-Guihen Queyras
comes back and play the bewitching Haydn’s Cello Concerto.
The evening ends with Beethoven’s Third Symphony.
Because of its length (twice as long as Haydn or Mozart’s
symphonies) and its complex tonal and rhythmic architecture,
the Eroica became a milestone in the history of classical symphony.

Violin Concerto op. 61
Symphony N.7

Patricia Kopatchinskaia, violin
Orchestre des Champs-Élysées
Conductor : Philippe Herreweghe

Thanks to the fiery violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaia,
Beethoven’s violin concerto becomes an unheard-of experience.
The 7th Symphony is a « masterpiece of technical skill, taste,
imagination, craftsmanship and inspiration » according to Berlioz.
But the work also made Weber say that Beethoven
was ripe for the madhouse.

Ludwig van Beethoven
Symphony N.3 "Eroica" [1]
Symphony N.7 [2]

Orchestre des Champs-Élysées
Conductor : Philippe Herreweghe

Found of his French Revolution ideals, Beethoven first dedicated
his 3rd symphony to Napoleon Bonaparte, but when the latter
proclaimed himself Emperor, the composer became furious
and decided not to dedicate the work to Napoleon anymore
but to the memory of the previous Napoleon. From melancholy
to triumphant hope, the symphony is also a mirror of Beethoven’s
state of mind – when he wrote the Heiligenstadt Testament.
The 7th Symphony, true surge of energy, is still considered as
”one of [his] best works” (Beethoven).

Ludwig van Beethoven
Complete Piano Concertos

Alexander Lonquich, piano and direction
Orchestre des Champs-Élysées

Alexander Lonquich and the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées
go for a serie of Beethoven’s five piano concertos.
Through the evolution of the composer’s inspiration,
one can notice how Beethoven emancipated himself from Mozart
and Haydn’s influences to develop his very own style
and to take advantage of the growing capacities of modern piano.

Joseph Haydn
Symphony N.94 "Surprise"
Trumpet concerto in E flat
Symphony N.86

Reinhold Friedrich, trumpet
Orchestre des Champs-Élysées
Conductor : Philippe Herreweghe

Coming back from England, where Haendel’s oratorios were
performed, Haydn decided to compare himself with
“our Master of us all” and to compose The Creation.
His contemporaries recognized the proclamation of man
in the image of God, a typical Aufklärung (the German
Enlightenment) conception.

Reinhold Friedrich, one of the leading classical trumpeters
of our time, will then interpret the very popular trumpet concerto,
that disappeared yet for 129 years after its premiere in 1800.
The Londonian Symphony N.94 “Surprise” and the Symphony N.86,
the longest Parisian Symphony, will highlight the virtuoso concerto.
