In addition to his 3rd, 5th and 6th symphonies, Beethoven
dedicated the Triple Concerto for piano, violin and cello to
his patron prince, the music lover Franz Joseph von Lobkowitz.
The work is unique in the musical sphere, although it has been
compared to Brahms's Double Concerto, for violin and cello,
written 80 later. In 1807 and 1808, three years after his Triple
Concerto, Beethoven wrote the 6th Symphony ("Pastorale"),
another work that is one of a kind, since it is Beethoven's only
programmatic symphony. Its form does not follow the
four-movement classical structure anymore, but develops a
theme chosen by Beethoven, in a manner that is close to the
nature experience.
The work inspired many composers, in particular, Berlioz, who
wrote a brilliant and romantic analysis of the work.

Brahms and Bruckner are generally considered the two last
great symphonists in the Germanic tradition, after Haydn,
Mozart, Betthoven and Schubert. They disagreed with one
another in the aesthetics discord aroused by Wagner's music
in the 19th century.
Bruckner admired Wagner and was criticized by the upholders
of a more classical expression, an ideal which found its
primary spokesman in Brahms.
Yet the two musicians were united in their love for choral
music. Bruckner looked back to the Renaissance for models
whereas Brahms was influenced by Bach's music throughout
his life.
In the end, however, for both composers, counterpoint was the
driving force behind their music.

In 1785, Haydn was 52 years old and had already composed
83 symphonies. The 83rd is joyful and written in
the traditionnal four movement form. The editor chose the title
in reference to the first movement whose dotted rhythm
reminded him of the squeal that poultry make when scratching
te ground.
The concerto K. 314, later transcribed for flute by Mozart, was
composed for the oboist Giuseppe Ferlendis. The theme from
the 3rd movement was taken from the air "Welche Wonne,
welche Lust" from "Die Entführung aus dem Serail".
The Symphony N.40 is a perpetual quest, full of questions -
to which the Jupiter Symphony, N. 41 will give answers.

René Jacobs conducts the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées
for two programs.
The completed manuscript of Haydn's Symphony N. 92 was
dedicated to a French count and yet the parts were given
to a German prince !
Whoever were the true dedicatees, this work testifies
magnificently to the composer's full musical maturity,
and it earned him a doctor honoris causa nomination at
Oxford University.
The air K. 369, written for an amateur female opera singer,
shows great sobriety. It is also one of the last works
composed by Mozart in Munich before leaving for Vienna.
In the air K. 486, whose text is inspired from Metastasio's
Didone Abandoned, Mozart expresses the pain of this
separation with a touching simplicity.

This production of Rossini's Tancredi, along with the
Mozart/Haydn project in early May, marks the first
collaboration between René Jacobs and the Orchestre
des Champs-Élysées. After some attempts in the 1980's,
it is the first rendition of a Rossini opera on period
instruments.
Tancredi, was written for the Fenice Opera Theater and was
premiered in February 1813.
It achieved a great success with the Venitian public
and contributed a lot to the renown of Rossini
who was not yet 21 years old yet. Rarely performed in a
concert version, this opera marks a change in the style of
lyrical declamation manifest in opera seria.
